What’s on TAP
Center – providing insights and opportunities for photographers.

Last week I beat the snowstorm and hopped on a plane for Los Angeles for some much-needed sunshine ….plus I was a guest reviewer at this year’s ReviewLA Photography Festival. Center, founded in 1994 is a non-profit organization that provides insights and opportunities to photographers who excel in their field, their aim is to help these artists identify their creative goals and assist in this process through portfolio reviews, awards, and feedback. Taking place twice a year, Center's programs include the Project Competition, the Choice Awards, Santa Fe Prize, Excellence in Teaching Award, Review LA, and Review Santa Fe(link).

The most famous photographer discovered through the Center was the internationally recognized photographer Alec Soth who was discovered at Review Santa Fe in 2003 and won the Santa Fe award. He has gone on to build a successful career as a fine art and editorial photographer. The year after his review he was featured in the Whitney Biennale for American Art and his photograph “Charles, Vasa, Minnesota 2002” from his book Sleeping by the Mississipi was used for the event poster and promotion. He has since gone on to exhibit internationally and all over North America, having recently been featured in the 2010 CONTACT Photography festival, of which I was a co-founding member. Soth was featured in a mid-career exhibition that closed in January entitled From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America. at the Walker Art Center, Minnesota, MN.

His ‘Fashion Magazine” entitled "Paris/Minnesota" is a look at high and low brow culture – where the artist examines the excess and glamour of Paris Fashion week juxtaposed against the everyday beauty and banality of his home town of Minnesota. His career has been made from finding chemistry and energy of strangers, as he traverses the eclectic and often strange American landscape, Soth is able to find beauty and honesty in all of his subjects.
