Milan Furniture Fair
50 years young!
12th of April to the 17th of April 2011
At the Rho Fairgrounds, Milan.
As a first time visitor to the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone International Del Mobile) I am terribly excited and a bit overwhelmed to visit this prestigious week long event. As one of the oldest (established in 1961) and most important trade fairs of its kind, tackling ISalone can be a daunting task with over 400 events, exhibits and openings going on simultaneously throughout Milan. Taking place on the Rho Fairgrounds, you will be able to experience and try out the best and newest things in furniture and design.
With some advice from Shauna Levy, Vice President of the Interior Design Show - IDS in Toronto, she helped me to map out a plan that would give me a better sense of what I should and shouldn’t miss so I don’t waste my time.
Spread between 24 buildings, my focus will be on experiencing what is new and exciting in the world of contemporary furniture design (buildings #5, 7, 6, 8, 10, and 12) while keeping my eye out for fresh and upcoming talent in the SaloneSatellite which features emerging designers and students.
Tatar Art Project takes a unique approach to work - incorporating our knowledge of design, architecture, and the art world into every project we do. ISalone is a great opportunity for me to get a snap shot of the best and brightest in contemporary furniture design; And if you're a first timer like me, be sure to pick up the INTERNI Guide to Milan for all the off-site design events going on around the city.
While Milan is recognized for its fashion houses and design, it is also known for it’s world class cuisine. If you are looking for a classic night out be sure to visit restaurants Osteria ai binari and Trattoria Arlati, and for an edgier feel try Dolce and Gabbana’s first concept restaurant GOLD. For a bit of shopping visit concept store 10 Corso Como and if you crave a sugar pick me up between exhibits visit Cova Pasticceria which was established in 1817!
